Program Note

Two sisters from Kathmandu, Nepal, embark on a journey deep into the Himalayas, climbing to an altitude of 5,000 meters to harvest yarsagumba, a rare medicinal fungus. The older sister hopes to earn enough to study abroad, but this arduous trek also becomes a time to prepare for an indefinite separation from her younger sister, as well as a confrontation with memories of abuse they endured in an orphanage as children. Through the story of two sisters relying on one another in a harsh and unforgiving landscape, director Alexander Murphy holds up a mirror to our own reality, inviting us to look more closely at the world around us. The more breathtaking the scenery, the deeper the ache beneath it. The film captures its moments of farewell with remarkable stillness. Murphy, whose latest film <TIN CASTLE>premiered in Critic's Week at this year's Cannes Film Festival, is an auteur the world is watching.
